Sedgefield's Saturday Markets
Our Saturday outdoor markets are a huge feather in the cap of a small village like Sedgefield and embody the “Local is lekker” South African philosophy. Wild Oats and Scarab Craft Village are wonderfully successful weekly events that draw locals and visitors from the length and the breadth of the Garden Route.
Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market

Some 11 years ago Rose Brettell and Susan Garner initiated the Wild Oats Farmers' Market. Their aim was to give local farmers an appropriate physical space to sell their own produce direct to the public, to take away the normally impersonal process of purchasing "groceries" and connect "townies" with "country".

The real value of buying local means consumers get the freshest produce - in this case picked the day before and even the same morning as it is placed on the stalls and the farmers get full value for their efforts without having to forfeit so much to middlemen and transport costs. Faces and personalities are connected to quality home-made products of all kinds that are presented with authenticity and pride.

Wild Oats has proved to be a successful formula. In a beautiful rural setting it provides a shopping experience that is an enjoyable and relaxing outing for the whole family.
Jut off the N2 highway, in a secluded area close to the Swartvlei lagoon, stalls of all kinds are set out in the sheltering cover of Australian Myrtle trees. Country music plays in the backgound whilst a colourful township band welcomes visitors at the entrance.
The choice of food is staggering, fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat of all kinds, raw, smoked, dried, pickled and cooked. Varieties of sweet and savoury pies, cakes, biscuits, jams and preserves, cheeses, breads, olives, and fruit juices are available.
It is a favourite meeting place for breakfast Sit on upended chopped logs. Larger ones are tables.
Holidaymakers - you can buy ready cooked delicious meals here and not have to cook for a week!
Many cultures are represented. There are delicious German cakes and cured meats, Italian breads and pastas, South African biltong, vetkoek and dried fruit, Greek desserts, Indian samoosas and chilli bites, Dutch cheeses –this list is by no means exhaustive. Then there are home-made herbal soaps, aloe based creams and lotions, cut flowers, fresh herbs, indigenous plants, proteas and fynbos as cut flowers and garden plants.

When you’ve had your fill and the stalls are winding down, between 11:30am and 12pm, it’s a mere hop and a skip across to .......
Scarab Village
Scarab Village "red-roofs" the Scarab Paper and Craft Centre and the Saturday Craft Market. This equally exhuberant, and diverse market showcases local talent and skills in the art and craft forms.

Whether it be original artwork, beautiful glassware, mosaic mirrors, flour sack clothing, hand painted tableclothes, beautiful beaded jewelry, bags, woven hats, hand carved wooden bowls, decorative animals woven from wire, an indigenous nursery, a children's playground – there’s something for everyone.
To adorn yourself, your home or your garden, be it useful or decorative, gifts for friends or family, the choice is staggering.
And should you require some refreshments, there’s plenty available from light tasty snacks to delicious lunches, whilst you take some respite to decide on your purchases.
It's a pleasure to drift around the colourful stalls in the warm balmy sunshine. You're sure to find a friend to chat to along the way whilst you're browsing through Scarab Craft Village.
And, one thing is for sure it will not be difficult to find something memorable to purchase as a reminder of your holiday in Sedgefield.

Last but not least, sandwiched between Wild Oats and Scarab Crafts Village is a third,
The Island Market

This “in-betweener” can best be described as a Flea Market, an overflow of the other two and yet not quite fitting into the specific categories of either! It none-the-less, has a vast array of goods edible, wearable, decorative and usable. Stalls selling a collection of second-hand books, white elephant, bric-a-brac, and CD’s going way back when, are an indication of some of the paraphernalia on offer.

It provides a means for many local folk to earn a living whilst delivering a service to the community. It has its own character -slightly 60’s hippie - with a great vibe and is definitely worth walking through as its quite possible to come across a surprise find or a hidden treasure!

Greenmarket, NYC Farmers' Market
Greenmarket was founded in 1976 with a two-fold mission: to promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms the opportunity to sell their locally grown, caught, foraged and baked products directly to consumers, and to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer.

Although is has changed in form and feature over the decades, Covent Garden has been London’s official market since 1846. Today,
Covent Garden Farmers’ Market offers wonderfully fresh and local food to its citizens and visitors twice a week outside on the square from May to November. Share the passion for locally-grown food direct from local farmers, growers and producers.
